Avoid This Common Animal Career Mistake
I‘ve made many ’mistakes’ on my journey to discovering my dream animal career…
But I want to talk about one in particular…
I really want you to avoid this common ANIMAL CAREER MISTAKE.
Maybe you’ve made the same mistake? Or you might even be about to make this mistake!
It’s the mistake of focussing your dream career search on ’hands on’ animal careers ONLY.
Here’s how it played out for me…
I love animals.
I want to make a difference.
So naturally I zoned in on ‘hands on’ animal careers.
First I looked at the most common ones that I could think of in my head…
- Vet Nurse
- Dog Walker
- Dog Groomer….
I ruled SOME out very quickly based on snap judgements or limiting beliefs.
I ruled some out based on the work environment.
I ruled them out because of what I ‘thought’ I knew about the job.
I got stuck in my head – going around in circles with the very few options I had come up with.
So I would turn to trusty GOOGLE – searching for different animal careers…
I would focus in on something, then start to research…
But again – I would realise it wasn’t quite the right fit for ME.
Frustration set in.
I got angry.
I continued to dream about exciting and meaningful animal careers.
I started to get desperate…so I would go BACK to the careers I had ruled out.
I’d start to wonder if one of them might be ok?
I would start to re-negotiate with myself.
Maybe the pay isn’t that bad?
Maybe I can toughen up?
Maybe a vet nurse career would be ok for me.
I’m tougher than I use to be….Yes, I’ll work on toughening up… I’ll start watching animal documentaries and vet programmes…
Can you see a pattern?
In my desperation I started trying to change MYSELF.
I was starting to make decisions out of frustration.
But I still pushed forward.
I enrolled in a vet nursing paper via distance learning. This also involved a week of work experience and a week of practical training. I took time off my day job to do the work experience and practical work.
And what did I learn?
Or should I say RE-LEARN?
That I am VERY SENSITIVE and working as a VET NURSE is not RIGHT for ME.
Working at the vet practice made me realise very quickly that that environment is not right for ME. While I am stronger than I use to be, I still spent the entire time on edge and scared of what I might experience or encounter.
I’m so glad that I enrolled in that one paper though because it made me rule out VET NURSING completely.
Looking back the BIG mistake that lead me down that road was that I WAS FOCUSSED ONLY on HANDS ON ANIMAL CAREERS.
I had blinkers on that didn’t allow me to widen my career search.
And I only learned this mistake because I started doing the real work of analysing and accepting myself fully!
I dove deep into my dream career search. I researched, I inhaled any information that would help me with my search. I asked for help. I took action, I experimented. I realised WHAT I needed to make me happy in a career.
And then it dawned on me that a HANDS ON animal career is NOT what I need to make ME happy.
A hands-on animal career was the OBVIOUS choice, but not the right choice for ME.
Once I had my dream career manifesto (my list of career requirements that would make me happy) it was much easier to see the path ahead of me…
My dream career search then became about:
HOW I want to be of service in the world,
WHAT I need to feel fulfilled,
WHO I want to work with,
WHERE I want to work and the ideal environment for me.
Once I knew all the pieces of the puzzle of what would make me HAPPY, I could see that a HANDS OFF animal-related career was perfect for ME.
Obviously, this was my personal journey and was a big a-ha moment for ME.
But you may discover you DO NEED a HANDS-ON ANIMAL CAREER and that is TOTALLY AWESOME!
Have you had your blinkers on?
So I really want you to have a think about whether you need your career to be hands-on.
Think about your HOW, WHAT, WHO & WHERE. (If you need help with this, check out my brand new eCourse PURPOSE ANIMAL CAREER COURSE)
Another great way to look at whether you need a hands-on animal career is to ask yourself this question:
What would my life be life without a “hands-on” animal career?
How does that thought make you feel? Pay attention to your reaction.
If you really do need a hands-on animal career, then you will probably have a strong reaction to that question. You will not like how you feel when you ask yourself that question. And that is a great clue! You are one step closer to your DREAM CAREER.
