Welcome to my brand new blog series!
THE ‘PURPOSE ANIMAL INTERVIEW SERIES’
I’ll be sharing interviews with a wide variety of people who have lives, careers or businesses that have a strong emphasise on helping or celebrating animals.
First up in the Animal Career category, we have
ANTONIA STEEG – a PET PHOTOGRAPHER!
Name: Antonia Steeg
Career Title: Pet Photographer
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a canine psychologist and trainer, pet photographer, foster home for shelter dogs and animal lover.
How did you know being a PET PHOTOGRAPHER was the right career for YOU?
I have been working with animals all my life. After being a professional dog trainer for 9 years and a LandSAR dog trainer for 6 years, I wanted to pursue a more creative career within the pet industry.
What is your favourite part of being a pet photographer?
I love the whole process: the initial chat to the animals owner about their pet, to the actual photo session, to the design consultation and post production/ finishing. To creating a beautiful meaningful product for the pet’s owner.
What is your least favourite part of your career or business?
There is none!!
As a child, what did you dream of being when you grew up?
I wanted to become a professional Dressage rider and horse breeder.
When did your love of animals start?
Since as early as I can remember.
What do you know now, that you wish you could tell your teenage self?
Just do it and don’t listen to others trying to convince you that a job working with animals is not a proper recognised job and that you don’t earn anything.
One of Antonia’s gorgeous portraits.
What is a typical day like?
A lot of work via emails and phone calls – talking to people. Promoting the photography business via social networking etc. The actual photo shoot is the smallest part. A lot of time is spent in front of the computer editing photos.
How do you feel you are changing the world or making the world a better place? (big or small!)
Through my photography I help people appreciate and celebrate their pets a lot more. Having a beautiful heirloom of their animals will mean the world to them once their beloved pets are gone.
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra you live by?
Wake up and be awesome – because every day you will make a difference in someone’s life.
Do you have an ‘a-ha’ moment you would like to share that helped you move forward?
I stopped listening to others (family and friends) and started listening to my heart and my inner voice…being depressed or feeling low while working in office jobs tells you something!! Thinking there is no way out of this boring rat race…thinking “why do others feel great doing these jobs while I just try to find ways to get the hell out of there?” Well, the “aha” moment came when I started studying canine psychology and I was outdoors every day!! Follow your heart!!
Who do you admire or look up to?
People, who against all odds, followed their heart and succeeded in what they feel passionate about.
And finally, what animals do you share your life with?
Horse, dogs and cats.
